Social& Design
in Doornakkers
18 - 26 October

Social& is an event during DDW based in the neighbourhood Doornakkers that offers a variety of exhibitions, workshops and discussions. Young and old share knowledge and expertise, and work together to develop new ideas. By presenting both refined design projects and local creative projects side by side, Social& is a refreshing and timely event when the participation of citizens is becoming more important. Under the themes of Social& Design and Social& Wellbeing, it showcases the reality and vision of social design in Eindhoven, with Doornakkers being the stage and context of social design.

Glow Scarf Breadcrumb Workshop
Sunday 19 & Thursday 23 October 14:30
Vitalis Berckelhof Workshop

Glow Scarf, developed together with industrial designer Sina Kazemi, is a workshop about discovering how traditional textile skills and modern wearable technology can merge with each other. Technologists, senior citizens, and students work together to create handcrafts that mix the skills of old and new.

Subscribe here for one of the workshops

Participant fee: 5 euros

Breadcrumbs are workshops that initially aim to introduce people to accessible technology, and furthermore explore how people can actively engage in technology. We achieve this by providing specific scenarios for experts of technology and novices of technology to meet, work together and learn from each other.

Doornakkers Dorp
Atelier Elena Lovich
St Fransiscusschool Square

A social project that brings together residents and staff of Vitalis with local residents and artists to collaborate on an art object. The artwork is a wooden installation in the shape of a house, with open doors and windows. The exterior walls are painted in many colours and plants and flowers are growing from the ‘roof’. This artwork is meant to turn the yard of the old St. Francis school into a beautiful, liveable place suited for people of all ages and open to anyone from the neighbourhood.

The artwork will be created in phases during several workshops, and will be installed in the yard between the trees. There will be an outdoor workplace with tables and chairs where people, alone or in groups, can show their creative side.

Eindh Made

Eindh Made is a production network based in Eindhoven that aims to produce goods made by the town and for the town itself. The local manufacturers understand there is a certain “pride of place” that comes from actually making a product within a defined geographic, social, and historic region. To do so, Eindh Made connects local micro-factories, fablabs, and existing networks. It co-designs production lines with them, looking at the town as a place of limitless possibilities.

A product that is made in a networked environment does not just create exchange value for the market, but is a value in itself for a community of users. Every production line is available on an online platform, therefore transparent and editable. Currently we are building up the network to design the first products to be released as beta versions of the system.

Open workshop everyday between 11:00 - 14:00

The workshop series LaatsteMeubel is an “investigation by design” into the way people look at the transition from life to death and how their own creativity could play a role in this regard. Design agency Rake LIjnen conducts dialogues with visitors and directly translates the result of these conversations into designs.

By approaching death in a creative fashion and by immediately visualising the subjects that were discussed, Rake Lijnen hopes to circumvent the sensitivities surrounding the subject and to gain insight into people’s deeper needs. This closely fits the vision of the design agency, which has started a large project about funeral design with this series of workshops.

Artists make boxes about vulnerability and strength and how these are connected. Participating in workshops in the neighbourhood, inhabitants of Doornakkers do the same. Colouring and filling their boxes with meaningful objects, all participants connect with their inner themes, difficulties and wishes. All boxes will be exhibited and visitors can take home the box that inspires them.

This way they can reflect on what vulnerability and strength mean to them. After a few weeks, they pass the box to someone else, who can also investigate this beautiful, complex, layered and difficult theme. All reflections are collected and artists will use them to make new work, which in turn will be presented to all participants. Personal and neighbourhood empowerment are the goals of this project.

The cultural nomads are creative and active people from the Doornakkers district in Eindhoven. They are residents with wide interests who like to collaborate and share activities, have fun and make something happen in their neighbourhood. The cultural nomads organise activities and meetings, they provide opportunities for the young and the old to build up something creatively.

It is attractive and catchy, friends come along and decide they might as well stick around. We aim for cultural diversity and social mingling, we are curious, learn from each other and discover new playing fields in public space.

Vitalis Berckelhof Workshop

Lab in-a Lab is a project-based residency programme consisting of small-scale workshop activities, participatory art-science projects and collaborative works. The idea is to stimulate social innovations within the community using art-science as a tool through alternative educational activities. These activities are conducted throughout the residency period, the results of which are exhibited during Dutch Design Week.

The project activities reflect the transition of the Laboratory within contemporary culture as not only an exclusive space for scientific research, but as a space that embraces social and creative practices inside of it. Lab in-a Lab is made possible by Baltan Laboratories as part of the Age of Wonderland program.

Commissioned by the Municipality of Eindhoven and Woonbedrijf, Jackel Henstra (KAW) and Cindy van den Bremen (CvdBremen) work at the St. Joseph area in Doornakkers, in their role of process engineers. The result is not a master plan but a shared perspective. To this end, a vision and concept for the area were developed together with residents and stakeholders. It aims to brings the old parish back to life: the social meeting place in a new era.

In this perspective parties, entrepreneurs and residents collectively work to realise entrepreneurship and added value for the neighbourhood. By creating an attractive St. Joseph area with a lot of circulation, this perspective can start modest but strong, to develop district-wide later!
